Don your Masks and Capes!

It’s April 28th. You know what that makes today?

If you followed my blog for even a minute, you know I am a big fan of Superheroes! I have been reading comics since I was 5 and collecting them since I was 10. I’ve amassed a 10K+ collection of printed comics, and an additional 3K+ in digital comics. (And, yes, I’ve read everyone, a good lot of them multiple times.)

My basement is a museum of all the superhero paraphernalia I’ve collected, and I still get the same rush now, at (almost) 52, walking into a comic book store, or seeing or hearing an incidental image or reference to superheroes or comics, as I did when I first discovered them.

Of course, no self respecting fan can deny they dreamed of of having super powers. In fact, I’d wager most people have wished for a superhuman ability at least once in their life.

In honor of the day, I’d like to ask you a couple questions (a la my buddy Travel Penguin) that I hope you’ll answer some or all of, in the comments. (Or make it your own blog post!) I’ll really get a kick out of reading your answers. I will provide my answers later today or tomorrow.

1. If you could have any super power (only one and you can’t say omnipotence) what would it be? Ideas: super strength, super speed, fly, turn invisible, phasing (walk through solid objects), elasticity (super stretching), teleportation, telepathy, time travel, etc. Be creative and feel free to come up with a superpower you’d really like having.

2 Why this power? How would you use it?

3. Who is your favorite fictional superhero? If you don’t have one, who is one you are most familiar with?

4. Have you ever read or owned a comic book? Besides me, do you know anyone who reads or collects comic books?

5. Have you ever been inside or even seen a comic book store?

6. Can you recall a moment when you witnessed true heroism? (Hey, maybe it was you!)

7. Last but not least: Have you ever done any of these….

…the Wonder Woman Spin?

…the Bionic sound when running or lifting something?

…bumped fists with someone and said “Wonder Twin Powers, Activate.”?

…shouted “SHAZAM!”?

  1. Ohhh yes!
You were just mentioning super heroes yesterday! And Upton King @wonderlandburlesque did a post on this but with… let’s say more cosplay and less clothes. Now, Let’s see…
    1. Flying. Cause I read somewhere that dreaming of flying has to do with sex and I trust Freud (not really, but yeah).
    2. Because I could get places very fast? And remember how Superman spun around the earth and turned back time? Like Cher?
    3. I love Deadpool. And I love Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds even more. Gimme.
    4. I collected comic books until I was 15, when I left home. I had hundreds of them and I think my mom gave them away because they converted my old room into my little sister’s room. And I know about seven guys and two girls who collect comic books.
    5. Duh, Yes. I usually go in and beeline to the clearance bin. There’s always little treasures there.
    6. I think the fact that I saw somebody saving someone else from drawing by diving right near the breakers to save them would count. I was in awe. Trying to save someone from drawing can be fatal.
    7.

…the Wonder Woman Spin? Duh, Yes. Every. Single. Time.

…the Bionic sound when running or lifting something? Absolutely.

…bumped fists with someone and said “Wonder Twin Powers, Activate.”? Even recently.

…shouted “SHAZAM!”? Yes. Especially after I saw the movie.

    XOXO

    P.S. I’m stealing this, babes…

  2. 1. Luck
    2. I’d hit up the nearby casinos and have a larger stock trading account.
    3. I can only pick one? I’ll go with Domino since I miss her the most. I’m still boycotting Marvel due to Ike Perlmutter.
    4. I don’t know anyone else that reads comics. I read manga nowadays, but I’ll pick up Robyn Hood whenever there’s a new Zenescope series out.
    5. LOL WUT?
    6. I once tried stopping a fight, but then I ended up becoming a bigger part of it. That’s the last time I’ll do that.
    7. SHAZAM!!!

  3. 1. If you could have any super power (only one and you can’t say omnipotence) what would it be? This is a question I’ve thought about since I was a kid and I have never once come up with something. I bounce from one to the next and can’t decide. Mind control maybe?
2 Why this power? How would you use it? Change evil people to good people.
    3. Who is your favorite fictional superhero? If you don’t have one, who is one you are most familiar with? Familiar with Batman.
    4. Have you ever read or owned a comic book? Besides me, do you know anyone who reads or collects comic books? Yes, but it was rare. No.
    5. Have you ever been inside or even seen a comic book store? No.
    6. Can you recall a moment when you witnessed true heroism? (Hey, maybe it was you!) No.
    7. Last but not least: Have you ever done any of these…. None of them.

Will you still speak to me?

    Teleportation!!

2 Why this power? How would you use it?

I would use this to be with friends and family at their times of need or my time of need.

    3. Who is your favorite fictional superhero? If you don’t have one, who is one you are most familiar with?

Aquaman. He has always been my favorite. I know he isn’t as “famous” as the others and I often found it difficult to find Aquaman things as a kid, still I love him. My fascination started when as a kid, (do you remember Underoos?) my brother and I went to buy some Underoos and the only thing left in my size was Aquaman. So from then on, on Saturday morning cartoons, I would really pay attention to the episodes with Aquaman.

    4. Have you ever read or owned a comic book? Besides me, do you know anyone who reads or collects comic books?

Yes, I own several and graphic novels.
Yes..many of my friends read and collect them.

    5. Have you ever been inside or even seen a comic book store?
Yes, many times. I use to play Magic The Gathering, so I did spend time in them, not only browsing, but playing Magic the Gathering with friends.

    6. Can you recall a moment when you witnessed true heroism? (Hey, maybe it was you!)

Yes… during medical school I would see it in the operating room all the time.

    7. Last but not least: Have you ever done any of these….

…the Wonder Woman Spin?–of course! Sometimes I still do.

…the Bionic sound when running or lifting something? Yes! I also had a bionic man doll as a kid.

…bumped fists with someone and said “Wonder Twin Powers, Activate.”? Yup!

…shouted “SHAZAM!”? Yes! I played Shazam all the time!

    • Aquaman and “Shazam” (I hate that they changed his official name to this. He always be the one true Captain Marvel to me!) are in my top 5 favorite Heroes!

And, of course I remember Underoos. We could not afford them when i was younger, but I know have grown-up versions of Flash, Aquaman, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman.

  5. 1. I would like to have Wolverine’s claws, please.
    2. WHY??? Isn’t it self-evident?!?! Sheesh.
    3. My fave superheroes are, of course, Captain America Steve Rogers and Winter Soldier James Buchanan Barnes.
    4. Read and owned lots of comic books when I was a kid. They were eleven cents an issue then. Can you believe it? Got back into owning and reading comic books again about 10 years ago. Now they range from about $5-$7 (Cdn) per issue. Ay chihuahua. Besides you, another comic fan and collector whose blog I read is Cal’s Canadian Cave of Cool.
    5. I go regularly to “my” favourite comic book store here in the city. I was just there on Wednesday to buy the latest issue of the Captain America Cold War crossover event going on right now.
    6. Have I witnessed true heroism? Sometimes on the news, like Tank Man at Tiananmen Square.
    7. No, I’ve never done any of those, but when we played superhero games as kids, I was always Robin because I had a big yellow headsquare that made a perfect cape, LOL!

    HAPPY NATIONAL SUPERHERO DAY!

    3. Who is your favorite fictional superhero? If you don’t have one, who is one you are most familiar with? I once saw SuperBoy filming on location.

    4. Have you ever read or owned a comic book? Besides me, do you know anyone who reads or collects comic books? No – not really.

    5. Have you ever been inside or even seen a comic book store? No.

    6. Can you recall a moment when you witnessed true heroism? (Hey, maybe it was you!) My sweet bear getting up to face the world each morning.
