I recently purchased a Golden Age Green Lantern Power Ring, in my ring size, from a guy on Facebook who makes them. Comic book “Eras” are split into different “Ages” based on the years they were printed in:
- Golden Age (1938 – 1956) – original creations
- Silver Age (1956 – 1970) – most characters were updated to be and look more “modern”
- Bronze Age (1970 – 1985) – characters evolved, but essentially remained the same.
- Modern Age (1985 – Present Day) – characters were updated and modernized again.
I was born in 1971 and grew up reading about the Green Lantern (and other heroes) from the Silver and Bronze Age, Hal Jordan:
This is what his power ring and battery look like:
However, I discovered there was a whole generation of original superheroes with the same superhero names and similar powers as the ones I grew up reading about, but with many differences. These were the original characters created in the Bronze Age, that were updated and re-imagined in the Silver Age. I instantly fell in love with the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott:
I also have a life size replica of his power ring and battery:

The ring arrived a few days ago and fits perfectly. I LOVE it:

And, yes, I did recite the original Green Lantern oath when I put it on:
“…and I shall shed my light over dark evil,
For the dark things cannot stand the light;
The light of…THE GREEN LANTERN!”
It always bothered me that it starts with the word “and” which implies there’s more to it (or should be) but there’s not. Still, it is the original oath, so it holds a place in my heart. The updated oath is a bit more snappy and the one more people are familiar with:
“In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight!
Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light!“
I’m so excited to have this ring to wear and as part of my GL collection. Woohoo!
A Ring of Power!
How empowering !

I can see why you got hooked on collecting. Do you wear the ring out or is it only for display?

I just got it and wear it around the house for now. I will wear it out when I start going out.

Uh oh. Are you and Robzilla now obligated to fight?

Not at all! I consider myself one of Guy Gardner’s Red Lanterns. We should team up when needed.

And we will 🙂

Nope – Red and Green Lanterns are professionally compatible 🙂

I don’t know a lot about this superhero series, but isn’t the “original” Green Lantern now acknowledged to be gay?
LikeLike
Yes. His son (Obsidian) came out many years ago. Then they made an alternate universe version of GL gay. And now the “main stream” Alan Scott Green Lantern has come out as gay. He and his son are the first father son gay family in comics that I’m aware of.
