It is the night before Thanksgiving and I am giddy to celebrate Turkey Day with a dedicated group of friends who have been sharing the day with us for the past 4 years. We do a pot luck dinner: I do the Turkey, snacks and cocktails, they bring the sides. I never liked or looked forward to Thanksgiving until we started spending it with this group of friends and now it is one of my favorite days of the year. Being the greedy, selfish bastard that I am, I am bummed that all of our friends and chosen family couldn’t be here to celebrate with us tomorrow; but I’ll take what (and who) I can get.
The day has started to evolve as more friends join us for evening cocktails after their dinner and family obligations end for the day. I would love for it to continue to grow as even more friends can join us for dinner or afterwards.
I had a few remaining dinner things left to get today, but wanted to avoid the after-work mobs at the grocery store, so I ran and shopped at lunch time. That worked out well, as we were able to head right out after work to buy our Atheistmas Tree at Target (plus a few more decorations) so we could put it up on Friday while we sip eggnog by a roaring fire in our underpants…or less.
But I digress…
This year, I have decided to brine my Turkey. I am always excited to try something new to improve my cooking skills and the taste of my food, so I hope it comes out well. Currently, my turkey is soaking in a bath of ice water, sugar, salt and various herbs in a cooler on the back porch. After prepping the Turkey, we enjoyed some rare downtime with the dogs, DVR and a fireside dinner.
