After a rough month or so for me/us here at Breen Acres, with my series of health issues hampering plans and activities and keeping us mostly housebound, my health and energy levels seem to be improving, so we decided we needed to spend some time out of the house this weekend. There was an amazing Labor Day sale advertised at a comic book store I’d been to once or twice before, many moons ago, about 45 minutes away from us, in Ballston Spa, so we made a plan to get up early, walk the dogs, go out to breakfast, then head out to the sale. Although I go to my local comic book store once a week to pick up my new comics, which are pulled and placed aside for me as a subscriber, I haven’t been to a proper comic book sale in a long time, as I’ve gotten lazy and tend to do most of my comic book back-issue hunting on eBay or in on-line stores; so I was looking forward to skimming the back issue boxes and drooling over the collectibles decorating the walls and shelves. Very old school.
The store didn’t open until noon, and we were done with breakfast by 9:00 am, so we had some time to kill. We headed to downtown Troy for the Saturday Farmer’s Market and perused the fruits, vegetables and bountiful eye candy. It was nice to be out walking around.
Still with time left to kill, we headed to a comic book store in Saratoga that I’d never been to, that opened at 11. Turns out it was in the Wilton Mall. We got there a few minutes early, prior to the store opening, so we hit two of our favorite novelty stores: Spencer’s Gifts and Hot Topics. Unfortunately, they were having a half-off sale and carried a lot of superhero themed items, so I did a little unplanned damage:
A new “Flash” emblem shirt (I ripped my old one)
A Sheldon Cooper figure wearing a Green Lantern Shirt
A cool string sculpted Green lantern Key Chain
Another set of superhero glasses to add to my collection
A fun new sign for my rear view window
Fun round sunglasses
The coolest belt I have ever seen, not only because of the superhero symbols, but because the buckle is a car seat belt buckle
A new set of superhero shotglasses
I did not buy this book because it was referencing the magazine, not the cocktail, but I thought the title was cool, none the less
After all of this unplanned, spontaneous damage, we hit the comic book store in the mall, where I found a complete run of a comic book title I wanted, for a great price. Cha-ching! Still having time to kill, we hit Bed, Bath & Beyond and Pier I before finally heading to the sale in Ballston Spa.
Oh my stars, I hit the jackpot and got a ton of books I was looking for, at amazing prices. Everything was either 50% off or BOGO; AND, you got to spin a wheel at the register for a bonus percentage off your total after the initial discounts. Despite possible amounts for 25% and 50%, I only landed on 10%, but it was STILL a great haul for a great price. Here’s a few shots of what I got:
Needless to say, I will be spending the remainder of my evening cataloging, reading and filing away my new books. Fortunately, football season has started, so hubby will be ensconced in his recliner for the evening, leaving me free to play with my new additions to my collection. Woohoo!
It was definitely a great day.
